New Castle Fire District No. 1 Modernization Project Update: Excavation, Formwork, and Concrete Pouring Underway
Chappaqua, NY

The New Castle Fire District No. 1 Modernization Project continues to make significant strides, with key construction activities progressing on schedule.

Key Updates Include:

•Excavation Work: Excavation has been completed along the southwest portion of the site, with ongoing excavation along the western section to prepare for footings and foundation work. Excavation on the north side is also continuing to address water seepage concerns. The site contractor plans to resume soil hauling and stone placement in areas affected by water seepage. We are also working to have the contractor dewater the site earlier to mitigate the effects of the rain we have received.

•Foundation and Footing Work: We have successfully excavated the south foundation and the four spread footings in the future apparatus bay. D&J Concrete has completed the removal of the formwork from their previous pour, which occurred before the holidays, and are now starting the formwork for the new footing work. Tomorrow, we plan to have the inspector review the North foundation line for proper bearing, after which footing work will continue at the North end of the site. The site contractor will also begin excavating the East foundation line, though we are still awaiting an estimate for this portion of the work.

•Concrete Pouring: Work will continue to form a retaining wall along the west side of the new addition. Concrete subcontractors are scheduled to continue work as part of the ongoing activities.

•Cold Weather Plan: A cold weather plan is in place to ensure that construction activities, including concrete pouring, proceed without delay despite any potential weather challenges.

•Environmental Safety Measures: Silt fences have been installed to manage erosion and runoff, with silt baskets placed to catch sediment and protect nearby stormwater systems. A tracking pad will also be set up at the site entrance to prevent soil from being tracked onto surrounding roads.

Community members are encouraged to stay informed through the Fire District's website and local announcements as the project progresses. Regular updates on the project timeline, traffic impacts, and other developments will be provided. The fire district welcomes community feedback and will continue to share updates throughout the construction phase.
